Pool Safety & Training

Many doodles and retrievers are natural-born swimmers — but being a “water dog” doesn’t automatically mean they know how to stay safe around a pool. One of the most common pool-related tragedies occurs when a dog enters the water and cannot find their way out. Even strong swimmers can quickly become exhausted and drown if they don’t know where the exit is.
Your goal: Teach your puppy how and where to safely exit the pool.
Step-by-Step Pool Exit Training
Create a Clear Exit MarkerChoose a consistent location for your dog’s pool exit, ideally the shallow-end steps. Place two brightly colored plastic cones or another visible marker at the top of the steps. This gives your dog a clear visual cue of where to go.
Add a Temporary RampFor younger puppies or smaller dogs, set up a sturdy, non-slip ramp over the pool steps. This helps them climb out more easily while they build confidence and strength.
Guided Exit PracticeWith a helper, gently place your puppy in the pool near the exit ramp. Have your helper stand near the cones and call the puppy toward them. Guide your pup to the ramp as needed, and praise enthusiastically when they reach the exit.
Increase Distance GraduallyRepeat the exercise multiple times, starting close to the exit and gradually moving farther away. Each successful return to the ramp builds confidence and muscle memory.
Daily RepetitionPractice this routine daily until your puppy can find the exit without assistance or prompting. Consistency is key — the goal is for your dog to instinctively swim toward their exit point if they ever fall in.
Transition to Permanent MarkersOnce your dog is older and capable of climbing out without the ramp, you can replace the cones with a more natural marker such as a potted plant or decorative statue. Keep it in the same place so your dog maintains a visual reference point.
Additional Tips
Always supervise your puppy around water, especially during the training phase.
Never assume your dog “just knows” how to get out — even seasoned swimmers need practice.
Keep pool gates closed and secure when unsupervised.
With a little consistency and patience, your doodle will not only love the water but will also know exactly how to exit safely every time.
